marmite: Finca la Tejera 2023 among the top 25 of 74 Ribera wines tasted blind

Swiss magazine marmite blind tastes 74 Ribera del Duero wines with a jury of seven experts. Unanimous Finca la Tejera 2023 makes its Top 25, ahead of houses acclaimed by Parker and Decanter such as Dominio de Atauta and Alonso del Yerro.

marmite is one of Switzerland's leading food and wine magazines: six issues a year and around 50,000 readers per issue, from demanding food lovers to chefs and restaurant professionals. This summer, in collaboration with the Ribera del Duero Regulatory Council, it brought together a jury of seven tasters — sommeliers, wine educators and the finalists of its marmite youngster competition — to blind taste 74 D.O. Ribera del Duero wines over two days.

Unanimous Finca la Tejera 2023 made the tasting's Top 25: the selection that marmite publishes with full tasting notes on its website, and which was poured at Mews House in Zurich on 19 September, free of charge, so that the Swiss public could try it.

The jury's note: «Dark and red fruit create an intense, juicy aromatic profile, with spicy and mineral accents. Elegantly structured and fresh, with finely integrated oak and plenty of character».

In a blind tasting, labels and reputations count for nothing: only what is in the glass. That is why we are proud of who we finished ahead of. Dominio de Atauta and Alonso del Yerro, two houses that Parker and Decanter regularly place among the best in Ribera, and Arzuaga, one of the region's best-known wineries, did not make the Top 25.

In the selection we stand alongside houses such as Bodegas Rodero, whose Carmelo Rodero Raza 2022 came first in the tasting, and Hermanos Sastre, the house behind Pesus.

Alexandra Banhidi, one of the judges, summed up the tasting: «What I particularly love about the region is the combination of power and depth with freshness, elegance and finesse». That is exactly what we look for in La Tejera, the family's mother vineyard: 0.65 hectares planted before 1920, bush-trained, at 820 metres, on heavy clay, where Tinto Fino grows alongside Garnacha, Albillo and Malvasía.

This recognition adds to those from Wein+Markt for this same Finca la Tejera 2023, Decanter for Unanimous Santa Cruz 2022 and JancisRobinson.com for Finca la Tejera 2021.

«Dunkle und rote Früchte sorgen für eine intensive, saftige Aromatik, ergänzt von würzigen und mineralischen Akzenten. Elegant strukturiert und frisch, mit fein eingebundenem Holz und viel Charakter.»
